Planning for winter

It’s important to prepare carefully for winter weather to make sure you stay as safe as possible and avoid any accidents. Take a look at our hints and tips below and please let us know if you would like to share any tips of your own.

Thinking ahead

  • Make sure you get any prescriptions filled before they run out.
  • Keep an Emergency Kit to hand and include any medical supplies that you may need. There are some good examples at http://evaq8.co.uk/. You may want to keep one in your home and another in your car.
  • Store a backup battery for your electric wheelchair at home and check its charge level regularly.
  • Stock up on tins, bottled water and other food items that can be consumed without cooking.
  • Keep your mobile phone charged, along with a spare battery or emergency charger.
  • Agree a plan with family or friends to contact each other regularly during bad weather.
  • Consider getting snow tyres. We can help you identify the right tyres for your chair – get in touch.
  • If you can, store your mobility equipment indoors rather than a garage or shed. Cold weather can adversely affect batteries, as well as the equipment.

Before you leave

  • Wearing warm clothes, gloves and socks may be obvious, but it’s also worth packing a blanket, hat and scarf, as well as an extra pair of gloves and socks. Keep them dry in a backpack or specialised bag, securely attached to your wheelchair.
  • Check your wheelchair. Look over your frame to make sure everything is in good working order and that all nuts and bolts are tight. Make sure your tyres are ok.
  • Check your battery, along with any documentation you may have to understand how bad weather could affect it.
  • Check and clear any pathways and ramps. Salt works well to clear ice but can cause metal ramps to rust and some de-icing products can poison animals. It’s important to choose the right product for your circumstances.
  • Contact a family member or friend when you set out and when get back.
  • If you drive, check your car in line with the manufacturer’s guidelines.

Embracing colder weather is a less stressful process when you are prepared. Letting someone know where you are when you leave your house, means someone is there for you if the worst should happen and you get stranded. Be prepared, stay safe and enjoy the weather.
