What is the difference between Mobility Scooters and Powerchairs?

Understanding Mobility Scooters and Powerchairs

Mobility scooters and powerchairs are often talked about interchangeably. However, these two classes of mobility devices are cousins, not twins. Although they can both help people with mobility issues to get around in their day to day life, mobility scooters and powerchairs have some important differences that you need to know about when considering one for yourself. Read on to learn more.

The Difference Between a Mobility Scooter and Powerchair

Mobility scooters have a large flat platform connected to 3-4 wheels. There is a control tiller in the front with handlebars, allowing you to operate the device. You can set your distance from the base platform by adjusting your seat height. Tall people or those looking for greater weight capacity and stability may prefer the design of a mobility scooter. These devices are also popular with people who spend a lot of time outdoors because many mobility scooters are equipped with a rugged suspension that can handle many types of terrain.

Meanwhile, a powerchair resembles a wheelchair and is manoeuvred by a joystick set into the armrest. Powerchairs have a narrower base with two drive wheels and casters for added stability. Their foot platform can be adjusted or moved out of the way. This is a great feature for people with certain mobility issues. Overall, powerchairs tend to be more compact, lightweight, and manoeuvrable than mobility scooters.
